"The Planted Way"
Studio Values
At Planted Art Studio we believe anyone can learn to draw and everyone should learn to appreciate art. Like English has phonics and math has equations, art has a grammar that can be taught and learned. The ability to do art isn't a magical skill that some are gifted with and no one else can get. At Planted Studio students learn the "building blocks" of art; things like how to see shapes in pictures, how to recognize and use shading and blending, and how to use composition and perspective effectively. This will give them a foundation to appreciate and understand all types of art, and to create good art themselves.
Planted's classical art curriculum imitates historical art masters and quality illustrators. Great art has a history and Planted Studio connects to those valuable roots. While many art venues feature what is cutting edge, students here are encouraged to study and appreciate what is true, good, and beautiful in the art of the past. In addition to connecting to the past, we connect to our present. Older students are taught to take excellent reference photos themselves so that when they move to composing their own art it's not only more original than many of their peers' work, but also more personal. They can begin to incorporate the true, good, and beautiful from the past into their own unique story.
At Planted we foster community, not competition. The classroom has a sense of positive feedback and sometimes constructive criticism but all with a sense of encouraging to excellence. Older students have opportunities to compete in local art competitions, but that too is done with a sense of valuing the community of the studio and our local community. Students are encouraged to find their value not in what they create, but in the One who created them.
